massage and therapeutic yoga combine as valuable tools in managing and treating back pain including muscle spasms, herniated disc, sciatica etc. This combined approach is also suitable for neck pain and shoulder pain conditions. many people find that receiving a massage gives them benefits that last for a limited period of time, so by adding in yoga that you can practice at home regularly, you can maintain the benefits and in many cases resolve the condition. i believe that this approach is superior to appointments with a physiotherapist as they will not provide hands-on soft tissue work, only prescribe exercises
each session lasts 90 minutes (or 2 hours if you prefer a longer massage) and is made up of three parts:
assessment: to identify the areas of concern and devise a treatment programme suitable for the individual. Information from your GP or physiotherapist is taken into account, as well as your experience of pain, duration of the condition, postural assessment and any other relevant factors
massage: a specially adapted version of ayurvedic yoga massage responds to your personal condition so that you can relax feeling safe and secure knowing that the treatment will assist rather than exacerbate your pack pain. if you are experiencing serious back pain, such as from disc herniation, you will receive the massage lying on your side which ensures a safe treatment
yoga therapy: after the massage i will teach you yoga exercises that you can practice regularly at home. usually these are a combination of stretches to release tension in the muscles of the back, mobilisation exercises to improve the range of movement and encourage good blood circulation in muscles which have become locked-down and experiencing spasms. eventually, as the pain reduces, exercises to strengthen muscles to support the back and improve posture are introduced
